April Call Log

April 1, 2009
On Wednesday, April 1, 2009 Rescue 75 was dispatched to standby while Station 51 was operating on a 3 car MVA at Exit 7 on the Casey Highway. Details to follow: There was one vehicle rolled over, a tractor trailer and a pick-up truck.  Chief 62 (MacDonald) arrived, established command, and reporting one entrapped, two ejected, two walking wounded and a large fuel spill from the tractor trailer.

Rescue 51 arrived going to work on the overturned vehicle, deploying the Hurst tools to create an extrication path for the confined patient through the rear driver's door.   Rescue 51-2 and Rescue 59 arrived to begin defensive operations on the 100+ gallons of diesel fuel leaking from the tractor trailer's ruptured saddle tank.   Engine 60 and Squad 62 provided fire protection.

Cottage EMS packaged, treated and transported the two ejected patients while Waymart EMS transported the patient who had been entrapped in the SUV, all going to CMC.  59-8 transported a 4th patient to MCH with minor injuries with the 5th patient (tractor trailer driver) was not injured.

With the on scene hazmat supplies quickly used up, command requested additional resources for the spill.  Engines 51 and 61-4, as well as Squad 59 and Rescue 51-1 assisted.  Stockpile supplies were used from Station 60, Station 51 Fire and the Cottage HQ.    Crews remained on scene for over 3 hours while the hazmat team did the cleanup. 75 Rescue was moved up later to the scene for traffic control assistance. On Monday, April 20, 2009 at 13:25 hours during a snow storm, Station 75, Waymart EMS, and Mobile 9 were dispatched for a 2 car MVA with ejection on Farview Mountain near Smoke 'n' Joes.

Waymart EMS responded within 1 minute and Rescue 75 was on the road with a crew of 4 within 4 minutes of the dispatch. While enroute, Chief 75 requested Rescue 59 and Squad 62 to the scene. Waymart EMS arrived on scene first to report 2 patients (1 ejected and 1 entrapped) Rescue 75 and Chief 75 marked on scene at 13:36 with Chief 75 establishing the "Route 6 command". Waymart EMS and Mobile 9 crews made access to the patient as Rescue 75 crews went to work on stabilizing the vehicle and using the combination Hurst Tool to pop the door. Chief 62 also marked on scene and assisted crews with the extrication. A communication error at the communications center sent Rescue 51 in stead of Rescue 59. Rescue 51 was staged at the old Smoke 'n' Joes. The rescue 75 crew had a 9 minute extrication time from when they arrived on scene. Waymart EMS and Mobile 9 were enroute to the hospital with both patients within 15 minutes of their arrival. Rescue 51 returned to service by command. Rescue 75 and fire police 75 remained on scene for traffic control until road was cleared.

Once again, a GREAT working relationship between fire and EMS crews made for a flawless rescue. Command was terminated at 14:41 with all units returning to service. A special thanks goes out to Chief 62 for his help with the extrication.
